Yang Wood (甲) — The Tall Pine
In Korean Saju (사주, the Four Pillars), your Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day you were born — the character that stands for "you" in your chart. 甲 is pronounced Gap in Korean (갑), and it is the yang form of Wood.
Yang Wood is pictured as a tall pine or a great tree: rooted, upright and always growing toward the light. If your Day Master is 甲, the traditional reading is that you like direction and purpose. You would rather build something that lasts than chase something that only looks good today. People often describe Yang Wood types as principled, protective and quietly ambitious — the friend who plans the route and makes sure everyone gets home.
Natural strengths
- A clear sense of direction once you have chosen a goal
- Protective of people and projects you believe in
- Patient growth: you are willing to put in years, not weeks
- Honest, straightforward communication
Blind spots
A tree that only grows upward can become rigid. Yang Wood can find it hard to change course, take advice or admit that a plan has stopped working. Under pressure you may push harder in the same direction instead of bending. The traditional advice is simple: strong trees survive storms because they flex.
Work and money
At work, 甲 often does well with long projects, leadership roles, education, building teams or anything that grows over time. Money tends to follow steady effort rather than quick wins; a slow, structured plan usually suits you better than speculation.
Love and friendship
In relationships you are loyal and protective, and you show love by building a future together. Partners appreciate your reliability; they may sometimes wish you would ask what they want instead of deciding the plan for both of you.
Wood and the other elements
Saju reads relationships through the Five Elements' generating and controlling cycles. For a Yang Wood Day Master:
- Same element (Wood): people and moments that feel familiar — easy understanding, and sometimes friendly competition.
- Water feeds Wood: in the traditional generating cycle, Water supports you. People strong in Water often feel like mentors or a safe harbour.
- Wood feeds Fire: you naturally support Fire — this is where your effort turns into output, creativity and care.
- Wood shapes Earth: in the controlling cycle you manage Earth; traditionally this relates to resources, money and practical goals.
- Metal shapes Wood: Metal challenges you — the friction that builds structure, discipline and recognition when there is respect.
Traditional qualities of Wood are growth, planning and kindness; its traditional colours are green and teal.
Yin, yang and the seasons
Yang stems are traditionally read as outward and initiating: they start things, take up space and act on the world directly. That is why 甲 and its yin sibling share the element Wood but feel quite different in daily life.
Saju also looks at when you were born. Wood is traditionally strongest for people born in spring, when its season is in charge, and it asks for more support for those born in autumn. So two people with the same 甲 Day Master can read very differently: one may need to soften and share their Wood, the other to protect and feed it. Your month pillar shows which side you are on — it is one of the first things a Korean reader checks.
Keeping your balance
Make room for rest and play, and practise changing a plan without treating it as failure. Time in nature, especially among trees, is a classic Wood restorative.
For a Yang Wood Day Master, your Wood feeds Fire, so it can feel like a year of output — sharing ideas, teaching, making things visible. Pace yourself so giving does not turn into running on empty.
Your Day Master depends on your exact birth date — and sometimes your birth time and city, because a day changes at midnight true solar time. Draw your free chart in about 30 seconds to see your four pillars, your Day Master and your Five Elements.
