Yang Water (壬) — The Open Ocean
In Korean Saju (사주, the Four Pillars), your Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day you were born — the character that stands for "you" in your chart. 壬 is pronounced Im in Korean (임), and it is the yang form of Water.
Yang Water is the ocean and the great river: wide, deep and always moving. If your Day Master is 壬, tradition describes you as curious, adaptable and big-picture, someone who sees connections others miss. You are happiest when life keeps flowing — new places, new ideas, new people.
Natural strengths
- Big-picture thinking and quick learning
- Adaptability in changing situations
- Resourcefulness and strategic sense
- An easy, open way with people from many backgrounds
Blind spots
An ocean without a shore can spread in every direction. Yang Water may lose focus, avoid commitment or find routine hard. The traditional advice is to give your energy banks — a few clear goals and simple routines that shape the flow.
Work and money
壬 often does well in travel, trade, media, research, strategy, technology and any work with movement and variety. Money tends to move quickly through your hands; clear structures help it stay.
Love and friendship
In relationships you are generous, playful and open-minded. You value freedom; a partner who gives you room — and gently helps you commit — suits you well.
Water and the other elements
Saju reads relationships through the Five Elements' generating and controlling cycles. For a Yang Water Day Master:
- Same element (Water): people and moments that feel familiar — easy understanding, and sometimes friendly competition.
- Metal feeds Water: in the traditional generating cycle, Metal supports you. People strong in Metal often feel like mentors or a safe harbour.
- Water feeds Wood: you naturally support Wood — this is where your effort turns into output, creativity and care.
- Water shapes Fire: in the controlling cycle you manage Fire; traditionally this relates to resources, money and practical goals.
- Earth shapes Water: Earth challenges you — the friction that builds structure, discipline and recognition when there is respect.
Traditional qualities of Water are curiosity, wisdom and adaptability; its traditional colours are navy and black.
Yin, yang and the seasons
Yang stems are traditionally read as outward and initiating: they start things, take up space and act on the world directly. That is why 壬 and its yin sibling share the element Water but feel quite different in daily life.
Saju also looks at when you were born. Water is traditionally strongest for people born in winter, when its season is in charge, and it asks for more support for those born in the turning points between seasons. So two people with the same 壬 Day Master can read very differently: one may need to soften and share their Water, the other to protect and feed it. Your month pillar shows which side you are on — it is one of the first things a Korean reader checks.
Keeping your balance
Build a few steady routines and finish what you start before beginning the next thing. Traditionally, a little Earth — structure, home, routine — gives Water its shape.
For a Yang Water Day Master, Water manages Fire, traditionally pointing to resources and money in motion — opportunities to earn, plan and organise.
Your Day Master depends on your exact birth date — and sometimes your birth time and city, because a day changes at midnight true solar time. Draw your free chart in about 30 seconds to see your four pillars, your Day Master and your Five Elements.
